Home/Financial services for business owners
Financial services for business owners.
An owner's finances rarely sit in one place. The company's cash, the retirement plan, the insurance, the personal portfolio, and the eventual sale each sit with a different provider, and no one is looking at how they fit together. That is where money and attention leak.
Trivium brings together the parts of an owner's financial life: cash, retirement plans, insurance, investments, and the eventual exit. We provide most of it directly. The rest we coordinate with your CPA, attorney, or a partner firm.
Banking relationships for business owners.
A bank's decision rests on how well it understands your business and how the request is presented. An owner who walks in prepared, with clean numbers and a clear ask, has a different conversation than one who does not.
Trivium does not make loans or hold deposits. We help owners prepare for the banking conversation and introduce them to banks that fit their business.
Banking services are provided by unaffiliated banks, not by Trivium. Each bank makes its own credit decisions on its own terms.
Who it's for
Owners seeking a loan, a line of credit, or a new banking relationship.
What we do
- Review your financials the way a bank would
- Help you organize the request and the package
- Introduce you to banks we know
What we don't do
We don't offer loans, make credit decisions, or hold deposit accounts. The bank does.
How it works
- We learn what you need from a bank: a line of credit, a term loan, equipment or real estate financing, or a new primary relationship, and when.
- We review your financial statements and interim numbers the way a credit officer will, and tell you what will draw questions.
- We help you assemble the package: financials, a debt schedule, and a one-page summary of the business and the request.
- We introduce you to a banker whose institution fits your size and industry. From there the bank runs its own process. Our planning with you continues alongside.
- Does Trivium make business loans?
- No. We introduce you to banks and help you prepare. The bank makes the credit decision and provides the loan.
- Will the bank approve my request?
- Only the bank decides. We help you present your business clearly.
- Do I pay Trivium for an introduction?
- No. Trivium does not collect a fee from clients to introduce them to any of our partners.
- Which banks do you introduce?
- Banks that serve businesses in our markets, and that we know accommodate or align with your business and personal interests. We match the introduction to your size, industry, and what you need from the relationship.
- Do I need to change banks to work with Trivium?
- No. We work alongside your existing bank. An introduction is for when you want one.
Cash management for business owners.
Most businesses hold more cash than they need on any given day, and in an operating account it earns little. Invested with the dates it will be needed in mind, that same cash can earn a return without being out of reach.
We help owners invest cash that sits above what the business needs day to day. Options include brokered CDs, U.S. Treasuries, and money market funds.
Who it's for
Owners and finance leads holding cash beyond their operating bank balances.
What we do
- Map what the business needs available, and when
- Invest the rest in brokered CDs, Treasuries, and money market funds
- Review each quarter and when the business changes
What we don't do
We don't hold deposit accounts or process payments. This is not bank treasury management.
How it works
- We map twelve months of cash needs: payroll, taxes, debt service, seasonal swings, and a reserve you set.
- We separate operating cash, which stays at your bank, from excess cash, which is what we invest.
- We place the excess across brokered CDs, Treasuries, and money market funds, timed to the dates you will need it.
- We review each quarter and whenever the business changes: a large receivable, a hire, a slow season.
- Is this the same as what my bank offers?
- No. Your bank holds your accounts and moves your money. We invest the cash above what you need for operations.
- Is my money insured?
- Brokered CDs are issued by FDIC insured banks, and coverage limits apply. Money market funds are not FDIC insured and are not guaranteed. U.S. Treasuries are backed by the U.S. government and are not FDIC insured.
- Can I get my cash when I need it?
- Treasuries and money market funds are generally easy to sell or redeem. Brokered CDs may have limits on early access and can lose value if sold before maturity.
- Does Trivium replace my bank?
- No. You keep your operating accounts at your bank.
Employer-sponsored retirement plans.
Employers sponsor retirement plans for more reasons than retirement. A plan is a recruiting and retention tool. It lets owners set aside far more each year than an IRA allows and reduce taxable income while doing it. It can hold tax-deferred and Roth savings in one place, and it can share profits with the people who helped earn them.
We help employers choose, design, and manage retirement plans for their employees and owners, from a first 401(k) to pension and contractor plans.
Who it's for
Owners and employers starting a plan, replacing a provider, or looking to do more for owners.
What we do
- Plan design and provider selection
- Investment menu management
- Fiduciary support
- Employee education
What we don't do
We don't give legal or tax advice. Plan documents and filings involve your attorney, CPA, and plan administrator.
Plan types
- 401(k) plans
- Profit sharing plans
- 403(b) plans
- Municipal and government plans
- Pension plans
- State and federal contractor plans
How it works
- We review your current plan documents, fees, and participation, or your goals if you are starting fresh.
- We compare plan designs for your headcount, payroll, and what the owners want to achieve, with the numbers side by side.
- We set up the plan with the administrator and provider and manage the transition for your employees.
- We review investment performance, fees, and participation with you every year, and hold education sessions for employees.
Your strategists
- Which plan fits a small business?
- It depends on the number of employees, payroll, and what the owners want to achieve. We compare the options with you.
- Can owners contribute more than employees?
- Some plan designs, such as profit sharing and pension plans, may allow larger owner contributions. Limits and rules apply.
- What is Trivium's fiduciary role?
- Trivium can act in a fiduciary capacity directly, or we can bring in third party providers to fill that role. We walk through the options with you when the plan is designed.
- What does it cost?
- Pricing varies with the size of the plan, the number of employees, and the scope of services involved. The best way to get a clear and transparent fee estimate is a conversation with one of our retirement plan strategists.
Insurance for business owners.
For an owner, insurance is business continuity as much as personal protection. A key person policy keeps the company funded if a partner dies. A buy-sell agreement only works if the money to fund it is there. Health coverage is part of how you compete for employees. Gaps here tend to surface at the worst possible time.
Trivium provides health and life insurance. For property and casualty coverage and employee benefit packages, we work with partner firms.
Who it's for
Owners, key employees, and families planning for protection.
What we do
- Health and life insurance
- Life insurance in business planning: key person coverage, buy-sell funding
- Introductions to partners for property and casualty and employee benefits
What we don't do
We don't underwrite policies or handle claims. Carriers do. Property and casualty and employee benefits are handled by our partners.
How it works
- We review the policies you have, what they cover, and who the beneficiaries are.
- We identify the gaps: key person coverage, buy-sell funding, family income if something happens to an owner, group health options.
- We compare options from the carriers available to us and explain the differences in plain terms. You apply, and the carrier underwrites.
- We review coverage when the business or family changes: a new partner, a sale, a birth, a move.
- What types of insurance does Trivium provide?
- Health and life insurance.
- Who handles property and casualty and employee benefits?
- Partner firms that we introduce you to.
- Can life insurance fund a buy-sell agreement?
- Life insurance is often used to fund these agreements. We coordinate with your attorney and CPA on how it fits.
Tax-aware investing for business owners.
For a business owner, taxes are often the largest single expense, and investment decisions carry tax consequences that compound over years. How gains are realized, where income lands, and which accounts hold which assets all affect what you keep.
We offer investment options that carry tax considerations, and we coordinate with your CPA and attorney. Trivium does not provide tax or legal advice.
Who it's for
Owners with business income, taxable gains, or a pending sale who want to understand their options. Some options are limited to accredited investors.
What we do
- Qualified Opportunity Zone funds
- 1031 exchange funds
- Roth conversion strategies
- Oil and gas programs
- Coordination with your CPA and attorney
What we don't do
We don't give tax or legal advice, and we don't promise tax results. Your CPA and attorney advise you on how any option applies to you.
How it works
- You share your goals and timeline. Your CPA shares your tax picture, including gains you are facing and income you expect.
- We identify which options fit and check eligibility: Qualified Opportunity Zone funds, 1031 exchange funds, Roth conversion funds, oil and gas programs.
- Your CPA and attorney review the tax and legal fit. We walk through the offering documents and the risks with you.
- You invest, and we track the position, its holding periods, and its reporting alongside the rest of your portfolio.
- What kinds of investments carry tax considerations?
- Qualified Opportunity Zone funds, which reinvest capital gains in designated areas under specific tax rules. 1031 exchange funds, which let proceeds from real estate move into new real estate. Roth conversion strategies, which move pretax retirement money into Roth accounts. Oil and gas programs, which carry their own deductions. Each has its own rules, eligibility, costs, and risks, and the offering documents describe them in full.
- Are these investments risky?
- Yes. These investments can be illiquid, are often limited to accredited investors, and can lose value. Read the offering documents carefully.
- Will this lower my taxes?
- We can't promise tax results. Outcomes depend on your situation and on the law. Your CPA and attorney advise you on tax and legal matters.
- Do I need to be an accredited investor?
- Many private offerings are limited to accredited investors. We review eligibility with you.
Exit planning for business owners.
For most owners, the business is the largest asset they hold, and the sale or transfer happens once. The decisions that shape the outcome, how the company is structured, what you need from the proceeds, who the buyer is, are made years before closing. Planning early is what keeps those options open.
Exit planning prepares you to sell or transfer your business on your terms. We build the financial plan and coordinate with your CPA, attorney, and a business broker or investment banking partner.
Who it's for
Owners considering a sale, a family transfer, or a partner buyout in the next one to ten years.
What we do
- The financial side of the plan: personal goals, retirement funding, a plan for the proceeds
- Tax-aware investing around the sale
- Introductions to business brokers and investment banking partners when you need one
What we don't do
We don't broker the sale of a business, and we don't give legal or tax advice.
How it works
- We talk through what you want from a sale: the number, the timing, what happens to your employees, and what you will do next.
- We look at the business and the personal picture together: what the proceeds need to fund, and what your own balance sheet looks like without the company.
- We build the plan with your CPA and attorney, and introduce a business broker or investment banking partner when the sale needs one.
- We stay involved through diligence, closing, and after, when the proceeds need an investment and income plan.
- How early should I start?
- Earlier gives you more options. Many owners begin three to five years before a planned sale, though the right timing depends on the business and the buyer.
- Do you find buyers?
- No. A business broker or an investment banking partner handles the sale. We can introduce you to partners when you need one.
- What happens to the money after the sale?
- We build an investment and income plan for the proceeds based on your goals and tax situation, coordinated with your CPA.
- What do my CPA and attorney do?
- They advise you on the tax and legal sides of the sale. We work with them so the financial plan fits.
